“A Cherished Accumulation” is the way the Ballingers describe their collection which includes some of their favorite artists. Linda Ballinger writes: “We collect what we love and in many cases, it is because we have known the artists and have become friends that we end up cherishing their work and eventually purchase something from them or their gallery.”
Among the artists collected by the Ballingers are: Mark Klett, Stephen Marc, Richard Arentz, Jamey Stillings, Craig Smith, William Fuller, Terry Evans, Kate Breakey, David Gibson, Joel Leivick, and William Clift.
Since childhood, when Linda’s grandfather let her hold his camera, she has been taking photos of everything, everywhere she went. Her studies at ASU included photo history with Bill Jay and black and white photography with Bill Jenkins. Jim became interested in the history of photography as a graduate student where he was President of the Student Friends of Art. He is still proud of the group’s first purchase, Eugene Smith’s Tomoko and Mother in the Bath, perhaps one of the greatest documentary photographs in the history of art. At times throughout their collecting, they found themselves bidding against each other in the same auction, once at Northlight Gallery over Joel Leivick’s image of Underground Quarry Workmen.
The Ballingers are pleased to welcome Arizona Photography Alliance members to their home on Sunday, November 5 at 2:00 p.m. for a glass of wine and viewing of their accumulation.
This exclusive event is free and open to 25 AZPA members with RSVP. Not a member yet and want to attend? See options here.
