Public Appreciates Guatemala – Arizona Photo Exhibition

Since 1988, Through Each Others Eyes™ has sponsored exchange exhibitions with photographers from around the world. The organization’s latest exhibition, an exchange between Arizona and Guatemala, is currently on display from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm through October 6, 2022, on the 2nd Floor of the Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
The public is invited to meet Through Each Others Eyes™ Arizona photographers at a free reception at the library on First Friday”, September 2nd, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
The 80-print exhibition reveals the different landscapes and cultures of Guatemala and Arizona as viewed through the eyes of two pairs of photographers.
In March 2019, Guatemalan photographers Rony Mejia and Javier Alvarez traveled to Phoenix where they were hosted by Arizona photographers Rebecca Wilks and Geoff Reed, who organized excursions in Phoenix and Tucson, as well as to Sedona, Jerome, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon. In October of that same year, Rony and Javier returned the favor by showing Rebecca and Geoff around Guatemala City and destinations in the north of Guatemala to enable them to capture images of the people and landscapes of that country.
“I’m just crazy about Guatemala,” Rebecca said upon their return. “The colors, the hospitality, the landscapes, and the smiles: It’s a photographer’s paradise. “
Javier added: “Without a doubt, an exchange like this one is a key ingredient for improving understanding between people and nations.”
Through Each Others Eyes™ is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation of diverse cultures through the medium of photography. It had its first exchange exhibit with photographers from Phoenix’ sister city of Himeji, Japan, in 1988. Since then, TEOE has sponsored nearly 50 exchanges with photographers from 13 countries and is currently preparing new exchanges with photographers in Kenya, Slovenia, Mexico, and Japan.
