JURIED THEME GALLERY – Shadow and Light

Shadow and Light: An interplay between darkness and illumination that evokes mystery, drama, and a sense of depth and volume. Light makes an image seem brighter while shadow can draw drama to a certain part of an image’s composition. For great photos, a careful balance is needed. The right balance of light and shadow can help your image by providing dimension and pulling focus.

AZPA’s Juried Theme Gallery is a project developed in 2024 that highlights the work of our members who range from full-time professional photographers to enthusiastic amateurs. A number of times each year, a call for entry will be announced with a rotating theme. Current members can submit up to three digital images that speak to the theme, which will be juried by a different professional photographer each cycle. The juror will select ONE image from each entrant that best represents the theme. Each of those images will be displayed here in the online gallery. In addition, the juror will choose one first-place winner to receive a cash award of $100, plus two honorable mention recipients.

About the Juror for Shadow and Light

David B. Moore has been shooting in Arizona for 30 years, and before that he was a fine art teacher in various colleges in Los Angeles. Food and architecture are what he is most experienced in; however, understanding the play of light on any subject is the basis of his work. David’s fine art deals with mundane urban subjects that may transform, transcend and eclipse themselves.

Juror’s Statement

I was honored to be asked to participate as a juror in the AZ Photography Alliance Juired Theme Gallery “Shadow and Light.” The work was diverse in style and subject matter, typical for open-call exhibitions. I was particularly impressed by the competence with which the artists executed the creation of all the work. My final selections focused on their visual impact and ability to engage my attention. This subjective opinion was formed by experiences that influenced my ever-growing understanding of photography. Your mileage will most certainly be different. Congratulations to all for participating in this quest that we all share: discovering what self-expression via photography is and what it can be.
