This image was made during a recent photographic large format film trip I took to Lone Pine, Calif. including Alabama Hills Recreation Area. When driving through Death Valley at the conclusion of the trip, I had hopes of avoiding a mid-winter snow storm bearing down from the north-west. I took the time to make a brief stop at Mesquite Flats Sand Dune. The location paid off when I found this windswept Mesquite Tree taking on similar shapes as the approaching storm clouds — the image was just sitting waiting to be discovered. Using a normal lens with 5×7 film, it allowed me to expose for the great detail and compose for the sensual shape of the tree trunk.
