Most of my recent work focuses on the natural world. Landscapes, plants, rockscapes, forest scenes, are all common subjects. And I make a lot of images that I intend, in the moment, to be naturalistic. Faced with a stack of negatives to evaluate, however—the fraught task of picking winners and losers—I am drawn to those images that seem to see the world a bit aslant from the one I thought I was capturing. I don’t think of these as romantic images. That is, I like to think something other than my own subjectivity colors these photos. I like to think that, under the right circumstances, the world reveals itself to be different than we thought it is. If you’ll go in with me on a bit of light mysticism—occasionally, for the camera, the veil might be lifted.
