Dreaming of Japan
During the Covid pandemic, I revisited and worked on older photographs I had taken, and in particular, I found myself drawn to images from trips to Japan taken over the course of many years, some of which I had never processed or printed. The result of this effort was a series I called “Dreaming of Japan” that reflected how much I missed travel to that country, and more generally, my yearning for a life where I felt able to travel safely and freely again. With their sometimes dream-like quality, the images were intended to convey the feeling of how unreal and distant a return to “normal” life seemed at that time. Now, with everything going on in the world, and this country in particular, normal life feels as far away as ever, and I am drawn again to working with these images, finding in them some respite and solace. This series is also something of an homage to some of the great Japanese photographers of the mid to late 20th century that I admire so much.
