I think about the Letting Go series as visual lullabies.
Solo is inspired by that moment when a mother releases her children to fly on their own.
Solo is a montage created with a breastplate collage that was photographed while backlit. The plant-like shapes vine around the form of the breastplate body. The paper wings attached to the mother figure are 3 dimensional. A child’s drawing was layered over the image. The embroidery stitched into the final print brings forward the grounded, winged mother and child, while another child soars freely above.
Solo celebrates the empowerment of the independent child and the mother’s courage to let go.
Note: The drawings are the work of my (now adult) children and they have given their mom permission to use their work.
