Arizona Photography Alliance’s Juried Theme Gallery – Silence online exhibition is a huge success. Part of the prize was the opportunity for the winning photographers to share their thoughts about the work they submitted in relation to the theme “Silence.” Here is our First Place winner, Dora Duan.

AZPA: How did you get started in photography?

DD: My father is an amateur photographer, and when I was about eight years old, he gave me a camera. I developed a passion for photography, but it wasn’t until years later, after working as a software engineer, that I had the opportunity to pursue it more seriously. I was drawn to photography as an art form after I enrolled in photography courses at a community college. During this time, I received strong encouragement from a professor who taught the class, which motivated me to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in photography. Photography also allows me to connect with my background in other artistic disciplines and literature. Now, I am a full-time fine art photographer.

AZPA: What are your thoughts on the Theme Gallery for AZPA?

DD: I personally love a theme gallery, since an exhibition is a powerful way to curate a cohesive and immersive experience for viewers. Themed exhibitions allow a variety of artists to explore a central idea from multiple perspectives and to create a dialogue between different works. A cohesive idea also helps audiences engage more deeply by providing context and a narrative.

AZPA: What was your process in selecting your image(s) for “Silence?”

DD: I typically start by reading the curator’s message about the exhibition to ensure I fully understand the theme. Then, I narrow down the potential images for consideration. Next, I filter the photos, looking for those that can effectively tell a story and communicate conceptually and aesthetically. Finally, I consider the gallery’s target audience and the space for the exhibition. Some venues favor experimental works, while others may lean towards more traditional pieces.

AZPA: What are your thoughts on being the winner for the theme “Silence”?

DD: That sounds exciting! Winning first place in your upcoming exhibition is an incredible honor, especially when the selection is based on creativity, storytelling, and technical skill. It truly is a rewarding feeling. I view it as a validation of my artistic vision and a motivator to continue pushing my creative boundaries. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for exposure and to connect with other talented photographers and art enthusiasts.
