Arizona Photography Alliance’s Juried Theme Gallery – Silence online exhibition is a huge success. Part of the prize was the opportunity for the winning photographers to share their thoughts about the work they submitted in relation to the theme “Silence.” Here is one of two Honorable Mention winners, KJ Herb.

AZPA: How did you get started in photography?

KJ: Thank you so much to AZPA and Buzzy Sullivan for the 2nd Honorable Mention award! After 15 years as a performing artist, I decided to retire in 2018. As a result, I needed to find a new form of artistic expression. I picked up my first camera and got started in photography through the Glendale Community College photography program. I never looked back.

AZPA: What are your thoughts on the Theme Gallery for AZPA?

KJ: I thought the gallery theme of “Silence” was incredibly interesting! Since photographs are inherently soundless as a medium, I had to ponder what it meant for the content of an image to convey silence as well.

AZPA: What was your process in selecting your image(s) for “Silence?”

KJ: Stillness and ambiance became the focus of what I was looking for within my images. Though I’m fond of silence, I know many are not, so I searched my photographs for unspoken tension as well.

AZPA: What are your thoughts on being the winner for the theme “Silence”?

KJ: I’m thrilled to receive the 2nd Honorable Mention award for this gallery! Thanks so much to Buzzy Sullivan and the AZPA team. I love my image “Seven O’clock”, and I’m elated to know that other people connect with it as well.
